WEEK 8: Gothic Architecture

WEEK 8: Gothic Architecture

Prior Knowledge:
My knowledge yet again was limited on the subject of Gothic Architecture. My knowledge of the gothic genre comes from the modern day dressing where black eye liner and black clothing. The architectural side I have probably seen but not accepted as being from that genre. I believe there will be a lot to learn and some bits that I will be able to bring forward.

My notes and takeaways from the lecture
Defining Gothic:
Gothic is a term used by the Renaissance to describe certain types of art and architecture of the Middle Ages

Gothic Architecture was considered inferior by the Renaissances, similar to how the Roman's held themselves superior to the Barbarians.
As time moved on moved on the term Gothic morphed into literature with elements of horror added in.
As we came into the 20th century because a style characterised by having heavy eye liner as well as dressing in all black

Gothic structures were usually designed and built to give glory to God. These came in the form of churches and Cathedrals. All the designs came from trial and error and not many of the designs were drawn down at the time compared to now where everything is drawn down. This lead sadly to many deaths.
The Renaissance saw the Gothic style as unrefined and in many ways ugly

Within Gothic Architecture there was use of what are called vaults in the roof. There were 4 main types of vault:
                               - Barrel
                               - Groin
                               -Rib
                               -Fan

To be able to hold the masonry for each of the different vaults the walls had to be
incredibly
thick to start with. To reduce the thickness of the walls, the medieval masons invented the buttress.
Over time these buttresses became more and more sophisticated. The walls also allowed for beautiful stain glass windows to be inserted. Stain glass windows allow for the stories of the bible to be taught to people who were illiterate at the time through the use of pictures.

Different periods of Gothic

Early Gothic
    - Notre Dame- a perfect example of the crucifix shape                discussed in last weeks lecture

    - Lincoln Cathedral- shows the repetition of columns and buttresses

High Gothic architecture
    - York Minster- sophisticated detail
    - High Gothic had high amounts of decoration as well as being well known for pinnacles
    - Very decorative and refined
    - Kings College Cambridge- had the fan vaults which were very decorative

Renaissance came in to refine architecture as they weren't happy with the art and architecture of the time
